Marina Feltlová Project website editor Marina Feltlová studied Russian and Lithuanian at Charles University, Prague. She worked as a translator and interpreter (from Italian, Russian and English) and as a journalist (Lidové noviny, Czech Radio 7 – Radio Praha). She is now a translator and an independent correspondent for Czech Radio Ostrava, Czech Radio 2 Prague, and Czech Radio 3 Vltava. She translates works of prose and drama (I. Brodski, G. Bassani, R. Kipling, D. Fo, M. Gelardi, F. Fellini and others), and has won several awards in the prestigious Jiří Levý Translation Competition. In her journalism she focuses mainly on cultural and social issues. Why should Ostrava be Capital of Culture 2015? I have lived in Ostrava since 2007 and I am learning all the time that this city has an amazing atmosphere that draws you in and does not let you go. It is unfair that such a magical and creative city is still perceived in a negative way by most Czechs. The days of ‘black Ostrava’, the city of miners and smoking chimneys, are long gone. The mines have been closed for fifteen years. The chimneys remain, but they are not the only thing that characterises the city. The heart of Ostrava is in its people. People with ideas, with visions, people who pursue their goals, regardless of obstacles in their path. People who strive for a good cause and never give up, even though they may often be merely tilting at windmills. People who love their city for what it is – with all positive and negative aspects. For these people alone, Ostrava deserves to be European Capital of Culture. … and why am I involved in the project? I do not come from Ostrava, but I feel part of the city. I want to do something worthwhile for Ostrava. I want this city to show the world that it has enormous potential that it can use. That it is not only a city of industry, but also a city of culture. That it can be proud of what it has achieved, and especially – of what it will still achieve. <<< back |
