Ivo Kaleta Member of the dramaturgical committee Ivo Kaleta specialises in graphic design, literature and matters of public interest. He studied Czech Language and Literature and History at the University of Ostrava’s Faculty of Arts. Since 1994 he has been the owner and director of the Graphic House design studio. He has gained several awards for graphic design in the competitions Czech Top 100, Golden Semicolon and Calendar of the Year. He has published the now legendary cultural review Landek (1997 – 1998) and the literary magazine Obrácená strana měsíce (The Reverse Side of the Moon; 2002 – 2007). Since 2004 he has been the press spokesman of the St Wenceslas civic association, which is currently involved in the Trees in the City project. He lives and works in Ostrava. Why should Ostrava be Capital of Culture 2015? Because in Ostrava, living culture is not yet merely a dessert after an opulent dinner. Because Ostrava is one of the places in our solar system where the presence of breathable air and culture cannot be taken for granted, yet it is here. Because culture in Ostrava is an essential condition for the occurrence of life. … and why am I involved in the project? Because it is an opportunity for aims and projects which we would otherwise not put into practice in this geological period. Because this project can cause major changes in the public space, discussion about Ostrava itself, and can give culture the status it naturally deserves in European cities, as well as showing what culture is and what it can be. It’s an impulse that can be more important for Ostrava than all previous investment incentives put together. Because this project will link us to Europe better than an eight-lane motorway. <<< back |
