The Old Arena
| Old Arena -
A club for culture and information 2015
Starting in March 2010, a unique space on Masaryk Square (Masarykovo náměstí) that was once home to the Music Theatre (Divadlo Hudby) and the Arena Chamber Theatre (Komorní scéna Aréna) becomes a “contemporary space for art and culture” with its own unique café. The culture-infused first floor of house No. 23 after years will again be populated by artists and the public. The creative atmosphere will be underscored by a unique café, which will be open all day. Theatre – Visual art – Music – Film The Old Arena is a theatre stage cinema, rehearsal space, atelier, laboratory and club all rolled into one. It’s a place where progressive young artists as well as established and underground artists and local scientists can realize and present their projects, which will all be characterized by creativity, quality and originality. The Old Arena was opened in connection with Ostrava’s candidacy for the title of European Capital of Culture 2015. What is our goal? The aim of the Old Arena is to bring together various types and genres of art and artists, and to introduce audiences to exceptional personalities and themes from Ostrava, the Czech Republic and Europe. The Old Arena is the meeting point for artists and progressive young people who cannot find space for their projects elsewhere. It is the place where artists, theoreticians and consumers of culture can find needed information and a strong network of contacts to support their personal development and the development of art in Ostrava generally. Film Tuesdays Every Tuesday the Old Arena becomes a cinema unlike any other in the Czech Republic. Most of the screenings will be 16mm films, but also VHS and occasionally digital format as well. There will be four dramaturgical cycles, including rediscovered films from Ostrava, films in the section “16mm Heroes”, films about important personalities, and, in cooperation with Czech Television, also a normalization-era stand-up show, improvised fairy tales, and so on. Saturday belongs to children Every Saturday an interactive programme for children will take place at the Old Arena. Forget about silly red-haired clowns. Our artists will wow the kids so much that they’ll never forget their visit to the Old Arena. |
