From Slovakia to Ostrava for work
Alžběta Knappová (recollections of her great-grandmother were recorded by Natálie Švábíková, a student in the V.B class, Zelená 42 Primary School, Ostrava)

“Great-grandfather went to work in 1956 as a truck driver at the Vítkovice works in Ostrava. First he had to find a place to live, so that his wife and children could move here, and that happened in 1957 … Great-grandmother was a housewife until 1960, when she went to work at the NHKG company.”

For me as a little girl, Ostrava was a huge city
Anežka Slípková, a student in the V.B class, Zelená 42 Primary School, Ostrava

“Right after we arrived in Ostrava the buildings weren’t yet painted in bright colours and the pavements were cracked, the paths full of holes. We didn’t know anyone in the building or in the neighbourhood. In one prefab apartment building there were as many people as there were in the entire village back home. I was always looking for a familiar face, but people were always in a hurry, they didn’t stop for a chat, and they didn’t even greet one another in the building.”

Karolína Michalíková, student in the 6.A classroom at the Ostrava–Zábřeh Elementary School, Chrjukinova 12 (from an interview with her mother)
My mother’s name is Lilie. She comes from Charkov, which is a city in the country called Ukraine. They speak Russian there, but also Ukrainian. These languages are very similar to each other.

Where to go on vacation? Well, to Ostrava of course!
Léna Chilaud, 9 years old, Ostrčilova International School

“When we had vacation in France, our parents would ask us where we’d like to go. I and my brother would say, ‘Well, to Ostrava of course!!!’ And so we came here! … Then we missed it even more, and our parents did, too, and that’s why Daddy decided to go work again in the Czech Republic. It all worked out, and our family came here for the second time, to beautiful Ostrava, which already feels like home to us.”

I love goulash, my Czech friends love sushi
Yeon Ju Hong, 9 years old, Ostrčilova International School

“Thanks to my friends, I know about Czech culture. We share experiences from our travels and from our lives in different countries with one another — for instance, during school activities and assemblies. I think that people in Ostrava are kind and good, and mainly there is a lot of fun here.”

Ostrava has given me a lot
Huang Ting Hsiang, 9 years old, Ostrčilova International School

“The local culture is very different from ours. Also, people in our country behave better themselves and with more respect for others. I think that we uphold our traditions and religion more. But I am still glad that I could get to know this place — I have learned a lot. I am more self-confident now.”
